eSIM laptops have an embedded SIM that allows them to connect to the local network, which means you can connect to the internet without WiFi or hotspots. Most of the major brands sell eSIM-compatible laptops now, each with different features, pros, and cons. In this guide, we’ll cover all that and more, comparing brands like Lenovo, HP, Microsoft, and Dell to investigate their battery life and cost.

In this article we’ll  provide a step-by-step guide on how to activate an eSIM on a laptop, ensuring that you can set up your mobile data quickly and easily. First, though, can you really use an eSIM on your laptop?

Can laptops use eSIM?

Yes, laptops can use eSIMs, but only if you have a compatible model. Embedded SIMs (eSIMs) are digital SIMs that are integrated into a device, allowing the user to connect to the network without inserting a physical SIM card. You can find a full list of eSIM-compatible laptops below.

They’re often used in modern smartphones, giving frequent travelers the chance to switch to local data plans in their destination without switching out SIM cards. There are other uses, too, including the ability to quickly and conveniently use a different data plan. These days, you can get eSIM-compatible laptops, tablets, and even smartwatches.

Having an eSIM-compatible laptop means that your device can connect directly to the local network and use data. It can provide greater coverage and potentially decrease your avoidance on unsecure public WiFi.

Let’s explore some more of the benefits.

Why should you use eSIM on your laptop?

Most of the time, laptops work perfectly fine on their own. They already offer a portable alternative to the desktop, and with the proliferation of public WiFi and available hotspots, you might wonder why you need an eSIM in your laptop at all.

There are actually several benefits:

  • Instant connectivity anywhere: With an eSIM, you can connect to mobile data networks directly through your laptop. This gives you immediate internet access without relying on WiFi. It’s particularly valuable for remote workers and travelers, or anyone who frequently finds themselves in locations without a stable or secure WiFi connection.
  • Seamless network switching: An eSIM lets you switch between different data plans easily, so you can choose the best network based on your location. This is handy if you’re working abroad because it means you don’t have to rely on your phone’s hotspot.
  • Greater security than public WiFi: Although many places offer free WiFi these days, a laptop eSIM is generally more secure. For business users handling sensitive information, an eSIM provides an additional layer of security thanks to its private internet access.
  • Simplified device management: It’s certainly possible to use your phone as a hotspot or get a pocket WiFi device. However, it’s more convenient if your laptop can connect to the network on its own. That way, you don’t have to drain your phone’s battery or rely on potentially expensive WiFi eggs.
  • Cost-effective travel data: eSIM-compatible laptops allow users to activate localized or pay-as-you-go data plans when traveling. Many eSIM providers offer regional data packages, so you can select a plan with more affordable rates than traditional international roaming options.

Essentially, you benefit from enhanced mobility and flexibility, alongside a secure connection. So, if you travel a lot, an eSIM laptop might be for you.
